Texting while driving is one of the most dangerous distractions because it takes all three types of attention away from driving at the same time.
When you send or read a text, your eyes leave the road to look at the screen. At least one hand leaves the wheel to hold or interact with the phone. And your mind focuses on the content of the message rather than the road ahead.
At highway speed, a driver looking at a phone for several seconds travels the length of multiple car lengths without truly watching the road. In that distance, a stopped vehicle, a pedestrian, or a curve could appear — and the driver would have almost no time to respond. Even at slower speeds, the distance covered during a moment of inattention is enough for a crash.
